CCA Ontario Nutrient Management Practice Exam

Applying nitrogen fertilizers during the crop’s active growth period in spring is ideal because this timing aligns with the crop's nutrient uptake requirements. In spring, as temperatures rise and plants begin to grow actively, they require nitrogen to support vital processes such as leaf and shoot development, photosynthesis, and overall growth.

During this period, plants can efficiently absorb nitrogen from the soil, leading to better utilization of the fertilizer applied. When nitrogen is applied in sync with the growth phase, it minimizes losses due to leaching or volatilization, which can occur if fertilizers are applied too early in the fall or winter when the ground is often colder and less biologically active.

This approach maximizes crop yields and ensures that nutrient management practices are both effective and environmentally responsible, reducing the chances of nutrient runoff into water bodies.

Applying nitrogen in late fall, before winter, or at harvest time is less advantageous, as plants are not actively growing during these periods. Consequently, nutrients may not be used efficiently by the crops, leading to potential wastage and environmental concerns.
